Help us realize a vision our Boulder Zen Sangha has been dreaming about for almost a decade.

Our Zendo entrance, as it is, doesn't serve the year-round activities of a meditation hall very well.

We need the entrance area to be protected from wind, rain, and snow. We need a good way to take off our shoes and put them back on. We need benches to sit on and cabinets to hang our coats in. We need cubbies to securely lock our valuables. And we need an area where pots, cups, and treats can be staged for tea and hot drink ceremonies during sesshin.

However, before we can improve the entrance, we need to lay a foundation. That means redesigning and renovating the courtyard between the Zendo and the Main House.

This will provide a solution to persistent rainwater drainage problems that have been threatening the Zendo interior. Plus there are other issues like crumbling concrete, potholes, and the entrance to the Main House, which is not to code because it lacks a proper landing, making it dysfunctional for older folks and those with disabilities. In grappling with these issues, we decided to divide the realization of our vision into three phases: (1) courtyard renovation and drainage, (2) garden design, (3) Zendo entry.

Phase One will cost $60,000. The good news is that two-thirds are already funded. In 2019, we raised $10,000 for the Zendo entrance, but the pandemic delayed our plans. And the Boulder Guest House, our supporting for-profit business, which also needs this project to happen, is contributing a $30,000 bank loan that will be paid back over time through our ongoing rental activity.
