Dharma Sangha Boulder is committed to providing opportunities for formal Zen meditation and practice. We are a community composed primarily of laypeople interested in cultivating the practices and wisdom of traditional Zen Buddhism in an urban setting.
Zazen meditation is held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 6:00 – 7:40 AM. One 40-minute period of zazen (silent, seated meditation), followed by 10 minutes of kinhin (walking meditation), a 30-minute period of zazen, and finishing with a 20-minute service which includes chanting and bowing. You may come for either or both periods of meditation, but please enter and leave only during walking meditation or in between the end of the second period and service. We also hold meditation on Thursday evenings, and meditation followed by a Dharma talk on Saturday mornings. Please see our Schedule page for more information.
Brief Orientation to Zendo Forms
We offer a very brief orientation on Saturdays from 8:40 – 8:50 a.m., starting 20 minutes before the start of Zazen. (Please do not arrive late for the orientation, as time is very limited. If you do not arrive in time you may still join our practice, but please wait for the following week for an orientation.) The orientation provides a brief introduction to the Zendo and the most basic practice forms.
Ryokan Gary Hardin, the Head of Practice at our center, is available for informal, one-on-one meetings. They are an opportunity to discuss any practice questions you have. Please contact Ryokan Gary directly to schedule: email@example.com, 303-579-6272.
Dharma Talks and Discussions
Every Saturday morning, we have a Dharma talk after the first period of zazen. (On the fourth Saturday of the month, we have a Dharma discussion instead of a talk.) Saturday mornings begin at 9 a.m. with 40 minutes of zazen, followed by 10 minutes of kinhin (walking meditation), followed by a talk. The talks end at approximately 10:30. For those who wish to stay longer, we do 15 minutes of temple cleaning (soji), followed by informal tea and discussion.
Monthly Open Discussion Group
On the second Tuesday of each month from 7:00 – 9:00 PM, Sangha members are welcome to bring their questions and topic ideas related to practice for this open discussion lead by Randy Fox. Informal sit from 7:00 – 7:30. Feel free to enter the Zendo anytime during this period. Discussion begins at 7:30. Contact Ralph Loeffler for more information: firstname.lastname@example.org; 303-482-5442. The group usually takes a summer hiatus in June, July, and August.
Each year, Dharma Sangha Boulder facilitates several Zen practice seminars with Zentatsu Baker Roshi and Zenki Dillo Sensei – the Founder and Director of the Crestone Mountain Zen Center, respectively. Baker Roshi’s seminars are held at the Chautauqua Community House in Boulder. Zenki Sensei’s seminars are held at the Briar Rose and include morning and evening zazen in the Zendo and meals together at the B&B. For information about upcoming seminars, please follow these links:
